MOBO Awards launch first-ever alternative category:

For the first time at the MOBO Awards rock and alternative music will finally be celebrated.

Almost exactly two years ago Nova Twins penned an open letter to the MOBO awards to inquire why there wasn’t a rock or alternative category. Fast forward now, and that question has finally been answered.

Starting from this year a new category has been introduced to the award ceremony highlighting and showcasing the best rock and alternative music of black origin.

For the 2022 MOBO Awards a brand-new Best Alternative Music Act category has been unveiled, with the nominees of course including favourites of previous The Breakdown cover stars Nova Twins & Bob Vylan plus Big Joanie, Kid Bookie, Loathe and Skunk Anansie.

Regarding the nomination as well as the creation of the alternative category Amy Love & Georgia South of Nova Twins stated: “What a moment this is, it’s a massive win for the alt. community,” To think back to two years ago, when we wrote our open letter to now, being here celebrating this new category alongside all the amazing artists who help push the genre forward, as well Kanya and the MOBOs team. Working alongside Kanya, we have been in awe of how fiercely she fought for what she believes in, while keeping the MOBOs thriving and evolving."

“We hope this new category helps give future artists more options, allowing them to be whatever musician they want to to be – be it in hip-hop, rock, pop, punk, R&B or anywhere in between, the choice is theirs.”

The 25th MOBO Awards will take place at London’s OVO Arena Wembley on November 30.
